The only archiving system that preserves its content from aerobiological decay and protects from flames and heat

Blockfire is a smart storage solution, a micro-ventilated protective barrier that avoids the installation of any fire extinguishing system

HeritageA vision comes true

The first Blockfire patent for the protection of documents from the risk of fire dates back to 2011. More patents followed, for the protection against water, mold and bacteria: these patents are registered in Europe, United States and Canada. Makros is based in Ferrara, in the area between the Faculty of Engineering and the Technopole – the ideal place to experiment with ideas to industrialise. Here, all the installations are designed: they may rank from dozen meters to kilometers long. Around ten professionals work here, from architects to designers.. A network of a hundred external collaborators revolves around Makros. The strong point is the technical-scientific committee made up of physicists, biologists, mathematicians and computer scientists who guide research and development. Makros systems are installed in museums and archives in Italy, Europe and Asia. They do not only contain paper works, but also works of art, paintings as well as furnishings. Makros holds six patents, which can be combined with each other. This is why we talk about smart protection and conservation. The material stored inside the cabinet is protected and also preserved.

Who is addressing Makros? The public administration, archives, museums, private cultural institutions, large companies that need to protect prototypes.

The vision we are realizing

Patents are nationalized in 15 European countries as well as in Turkey, Russia, the United States, China and Canada. Hundreds of installations have been carried out, including the modern library centre of Rami Barrack – the second largest in Turkey – inaugurated in Istanbul in January 2023. Here 12 kilometers of archives were built at a depth of 12 meters to contain 2 million books and hundreds of paintings. Other installations are at the Archive and History Museum of Bordeaux, at the Art & Sculpture Museum in Ankara, at the Minar Sinan University in Istanbul. In Italy, we have installations in the Vatican CIty, at the Brera Institute of Science, at the Polytechnics of Turin and Milan, at the Universities of Genoa, Ferrara, Bologna, at the Military School of Cecchignola (Rome), at the Bank of Italy in Rome, at the Ancient Book Restoration Laboratory of San Nilo Abbey of Grottaferrara (Rome), at Leonardo Aerospace in Rome, at Max Planck Institute in Florence.

In October 2023, Makros has been awarded for Blockfire among the 100 Italian excellences in the “100 Italian Cultural Spaces Stories Report” promoted by the Foundation Symbola and Fossa Bortolo, with a focus on museums, therefore on technology applied to culture. This Report was created to connect Made in Italy quality, beauty, culture and innovation.

"I often get asked how I came up with the idea for Blockfire. I worked in the archival sector and I realized that something was 'missing' in museums, libraries and places of consultation in general. Adequate fire protection was missing. There were fire extinguishing systems, but they damaged the materials. Mine was an intuition. I reversed the pattern. I started from the container. I studied paints, insulating materials, sealing methods. I researched until I arrived at the final prototype.I believed in it and I believe I made a difference in cultural heritage."
